Joining your local gaming scene: Why!?
Communities are a major part of life because, as we all know, we can achieve so much more together than we can apart. That, and there’s an amazing feeling that comes with being a part of something bigger. All pretty damn obvious stuff, right? Not what I’m really here to talk about. No. I’m here to tell you why I think it’s important, as a gamer, to be part of your local gaming community!
Supporting your local esports ecosystem.
One of the stronger forces legitimising the idea of gaming, esports is important to every gaming ecosystem. By becoming an active participant in local esports you’re helping grow its popularity and prestige, which touches on the worldwide scene as well. Whether you’re an organiser, presenter or commentator, player, viewer, or a million and one things in between, the esports industry is growing rapidly and your local scene needs your help to stand out.
Creating opportunities for how you want to live your life.
Getting involved with things, particularly locally and with a community vibe, both gets you meeting new people and doing new things. Before I got involved with gaming I had no idea how tournaments functioned, how to manage events, how to run LANs, how to negotiate with sponsors, all that good stuff. Diving into it as an organiser has build invaluable skills and helped me create a personality and network for my professional self. Not to mention I’ve made some of the most amazing and closest friends ever in my life!
You can inspire and empower those around to do, and be, better.
By being active and making a difference, you’re contributing not just to your life, but the lives of everyone around you. By joining events and having fun you’re bringing more joy into others’ lives. By creating events or groups or something similar, you’re providing a platform for people to connect over similar interests. The harder you work for your community, the more you’ll inspire others to achieve and do the same.
I honestly don’t feel like I’ve done much, or that I deserve much praise, but constantly I’m told things like “you’re the reason I got into x” when it comes to creating something for my local gaming scene in NZ. I can admit that I’ve helped countless passionate gamers realise that they have the power to do anything and they’re out there working hard and living their dreams in part because I was pushed by the kinds of people I turned into to do the same. It’s a big chain of motivation, and you could be part of it.
Pretty convincing, right?
No no, right, that was right…
Point is, if you’re an enthusiastic gamer you’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose by getting involved and supporting your local gaming scene. But how do you go about such a monumental task? Welp, it’s not actually that monumental. It’s easy. And it’s bloody good fun too. Stay tuned for our next post on advice about getting involved with your local gaming community!
